About us
At Internet 101 we are committed to providing a safe and positive experience for families who use the Internet. Our goal is to become a national leader in promoting Internet safety for youth, in partnership with local law enforcement and community groups. Besides sharing our own information and resources, we encourage other agencies to join us in promoting safe Internet habits to our communities.
Internet 101 began in 2004 as a collaborative project between police forces in the National Capital Region. Police officers became concerned after seeing media reports of a local website where teenagers posted explicit photos of themselves and personal information. The result was the first Internet 101 workshop, and the formation of www.internet101.ca
Members of the RCMP, Service de police de la Ville de Gatineau, Sûreté du Québec (SQ) and MRC des Collines Police in the National Capital Region teamed up to create multi-media presentations for youth and their parents, held in the StarCité movie complex in Gatineau, Quebec.
Presented by local media personalities, and with the support of La Fondation communautaire de la SQ, the Mounted Police Foundation and community sponsors, the dynamic presentations showed youth and parents the potential dangers of the Internet, and how to safely avoid them. Over 400 youth and their parents attended the event, which also promoted the simultaneous launching of the Internet 101 website, created in partnership with the RCMP’s deal.org program.
Since then, Internet 101 has continued to grow, working with local police officers to host workshops in schools and developing Internet safety resources that are currently being used in communities across the country. Internet 101 is housed and administered by RCMP staff in Ottawa, and continues to collaborate with police and educational partners to develop cyber awareness materials.
